STOCKTON – Plumbers with decades of experience are scratching their heads over this one.

For perhaps 30 years or longer, the sewer line from a north Stockton home was illegally connected to a storm drain, officials discovered this month.

Every time the dishes were washed, the toilet was flushed or the bathtub was drained, grimy bacterial wastewater that should have gone to the city’s treatment plant drained instead to Fourteen Mile Slough and the already polluted Delta.

“How and why that came to be, we really don’t know,” said Mark Madison, head of Stockton’s Municipal Utilities Department. “It’s a very unique situation; we rarely see something like this.”
